Volkswagen Arteon — service and repair in Espoo

Volkswagen introduced the Arteon in spring 2017. The model sat above the Passat and became the brand’s flagship Gran Turismo. Volkswagen positioned Arteon as a spacious, practical car with dynamic design, a large rear hatch and a comfortable cabin.

In 2020 the model received a major update. Alongside the refreshed liftback, Volkswagen launched Arteon Shooting Brake — a more practical sporting estate. The range also gained the plug-in eHybrid and the sporty Arteon R versions.

Arteon R and Arteon R Shooting Brake received a turbocharged petrol engine with 235 kW, or 320 hp, plus 4Motion all-wheel drive with torque distribution between the rear wheels.

Regular Arteon maintenance helps keep the engine, gearbox, brakes and electronics reliable. In Finland cold starts, short city trips, road salt, humidity and large temperature swings put extra stress on the car.

Even with low annual mileage, yearly engine oil changes and a general inspection should not be postponed. On TSI and TDI engines oil condition directly affects the turbo, camshaft timing control and other heavily loaded parts.

During service it is worth checking:

Arteon was offered with various TSI petrol engines, including 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI. These engines deliver strong performance but need quality oil, a healthy cooling system and timely spark plug replacement.

Uneven running may relate to spark plugs, ignition coils, injectors, an air leak or intake deposits. On direct-injection engines, deposits can form on the intake valves at higher mileage.

Driving with misfires can damage the catalytic converter. If the Check Engine light is flashing, stop driving and have diagnostics carried out.

A check is needed if the Arteon:

Diesel Arteon models suit long journeys and high annual mileage. The most common engines are 2.0 TDI units of various outputs, often with DSG and 4Motion.

With frequent short trips the diesel may not complete DPF regeneration. Soot builds up, regenerations become more frequent and the car may enter limp mode.

Issues can also appear in the EGR and AdBlue systems. A dashboard message may mean low AdBlue level, or a fault with the NOx sensor, pump, heater or SCR injector.

Most automatic Arteon cars use a DSG dual-clutch gearbox. The gearbox type depends on the engine, year and specification.

A healthy DSG should shift quickly without harsh knocks. Minor low-speed traits can occur, but constant jerking, vibration or delayed engagement need diagnosis. Used-Arteon reviews also note that the automatic can feel a little abrupt in slow city traffic.

For wet-clutch DSG units, timely oil and filter changes to the correct schedule are especially important. Diagnostics should start by identifying the fitted transmission code.

Some Volkswagen Arteon versions have 4Motion all-wheel drive. The system improves stability and helps put power down on slippery roads — especially useful in Finnish winters.

The sporty Arteon R uses a more complex 4Motion system with rear-wheel torque vectoring, so diagnostics must match that drivetrain layout.

Arteon is a large, fairly heavy car with large wheels. That increases load on control arms, bushes, dampers, wheel bearings and steering parts.

On cars with adaptive DCC suspension, electronically controlled dampers change stiffness with the selected mode. A fault may show a warning, make the car too firm or cause excessive body movement.

Some Arteon cars built in certain periods from 2017 to 2019 were also subject to a recall related to the rear wheel-bearing housing. When buying used, check by VIN whether applicable campaigns were completed.

Suspension should be checked if:

Arteon’s mass and powerful engines place high load on the brakes. In city use discs and pads can wear faster due to frequent stops.

After winter, check caliper guides, disc inner faces and rear brake condition. Salt and moisture can cause corrosion, seized mechanisms and uneven pad wear.

When replacing rear pads on an Arteon with an electronic parking brake, the system must be put into service mode with diagnostic equipment.

Faults may show as:

TSI and TDI engines use a complex cooling system with pumps, thermostats, valves, heat exchangers and many joints.

Even a small coolant loss should not be treated as normal. Causes can include the water pump, thermostat housing, radiator, hose, heat exchanger or an EGR component on diesel engines.

Find the exact leak source before replacing parts. Prolonged driving with low coolant can overheat the engine.

Arteon features a digital instrument cluster, multimedia system, adaptive cruise control, cameras, parking sensors, lane-keeping systems and other electronic helpers.

Assistant faults can come from a weak battery, dirty sensors, damaged wiring, incorrect wheel alignment or a specific control-unit fault. After windscreen replacement, suspension work or body repairs, some systems may need calibration.

Reading fault codes should include checking battery voltage, charging and live system parameters. Simply clearing codes is usually not enough.

Common reasons for diagnostics:

Arteon eHybrid combines a 1.4 TSI petrol engine, electric motor, DSG gearbox and high-voltage battery. Volkswagen offered the plug-in hybrid after the 2020 model update.

Such a car needs service for both the petrol engine and the hybrid system. Diagnostics may cover the charge port, high-voltage battery, cooling, gearbox and 12 V battery.

Some Volkswagen plug-in hybrids, including Arteon of certain years, had a campaign related to high-voltage system protection. Open campaigns should be checked by VIN. Work on high-voltage components must only be done by suitably qualified technicians.

Arteon Shooting Brake was introduced in 2020 as a more practical version with greater luggage space and a sporting estate body. Volkswagen emphasised rear passenger space and a capacious boot.

Technically Shooting Brake is largely the same as the standard Arteon. Typical service areas remain TSI or TDI, DSG, all-wheel drive, brakes, suspension, electronics and, for eHybrid, the hybrid system.
