Volkswagen Beetle

History of the Volkswagen Beetle

The history of the classic Volkswagen Beetle is linked to the Volkswagen Type 1. Series production began after the Second World War, and the first post-war Beetle left the Wolfsburg line in December 1945. More than 21 million classic Beetles were built, making it one of the highest-volume models in automotive history. Type 1 production continued in various countries until 2003.

In 1997 Volkswagen introduced the New Beetle — a modern interpretation of the classic model. It used front-wheel drive, a front-mounted engine and the Volkswagen Golf technical platform. The New Beetle was produced from 1997 to 2010, and the open New Beetle Cabriolet from 2003 to 2010.

The next generation, called Volkswagen Beetle or The Beetle, debuted in 2011 simultaneously in Shanghai, Berlin and New York. It received a lower and wider body, a sportier design and the PQ35 platform. Hatchback production ran from 2011 to 2019, and the Beetle Cabriolet from 2012 to 2019.

Modern New Beetle and Beetle cars differ significantly from the classic model. When booking service it is helpful to state the model year, engine and VIN.

New Beetle petrol engines

Volkswagen New Beetle cars were fitted with various petrol engines, including 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 Turbo, 2.0 and more powerful versions. Many of these engines are technically related to Volkswagen Golf engines of the same period.

Naturally aspirated engines have a relatively simple design, but with age faults can appear in the ignition system, throttle body, sensors, crankcase ventilation and cooling system.

On the 1.8 Turbo, typical causes of uneven running can be ignition coils, plugs, vacuum hoses, the mass airflow sensor and intake leaks. Used New Beetle materials specifically mention ignition-coil faults on the 1.8T.

If Check Engine is flashing, continued driving is not advisable: active misfires can damage the catalytic converter.

Volkswagen Beetle TSI engines

The Beetle generation of 2011–2019 used petrol TSI engines. Among European versions you will find 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TSI. Official Volkswagen data state that the Beetle 1.2 TSI with 77 kW was produced from 2011 to 2017.

TSI offers good dynamics with relatively low fuel use, but needs quality oil and timely service. Possible issues can involve plugs, coils, the turbo, direct injection, cooling and the timing drive.

The cause is identified after reading fault codes, checking live engine parameters and inspecting the intake system.

A check is needed if:

  • EPC or Check Engine is on
  • the engine runs unevenly
  • misfires have appeared

Timing belt or timing chain on the Volkswagen Beetle

The type of timing drive depends on the specific engine. Some petrol engines use a toothed belt, while some TSI units use a chain.

A worn chain can show as metallic rattle after a cold start, camshaft and crankshaft synchronisation faults, difficult starting or unstable running.

On belt-driven engines both mileage and the age of the kit must be considered. Together with the belt, the pulleys, tensioner and water pump are usually checked if linked to the timing drive.

If the service history is unknown, the drive type and applicable schedule should be determined from the VIN and engine code.

Volkswagen Beetle TDI diesel engines

New Beetle and later Beetle cars can have TDI diesel engines, including 1.9 TDI, 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI depending on generation and market.

The older 1.9 TDI is usually considered quite durable, but age-related issues can appear with the vacuum system, turbo, mass airflow sensor, EGR valve, injectors and dual-mass flywheel.

On more modern diesels the DPF particulate filter also needs attention. With frequent short trips regeneration may not finish, leading to gradual soot build-up.

For diesel Beetle cars from 2012–2018 it is also worth checking whether applicable NOx emissions-control work has been carried out.

Diagnostics are recommended if:

Volkswagen Beetle DSG

Some modern Beetle cars use a robotic DSG gearbox. The gearbox type depends on the fitted engine and model year.

DSG should change gears without strong shocks or prolonged delay. A slight quirk at low speed can occur due to the robotic design, but constant vibration or strong jerks need checking.

Causes may include the clutches, mechatronic unit, adaptation, flywheel, powertrain mounts or the mechanical part of the transmission.

The oil-change schedule depends on the specific DSG type. Before service the gearbox code must be identified.

Manual gearbox and clutch

New Beetle reviews note that the clutch on some cars could need replacement at relatively low mileage. That does not mean the same life for every car, but when buying a used Beetle clutch operation should be checked especially carefully.

Volkswagen Beetle suspension

Modern Beetle models use Volkswagen Golf technical solutions but have their own suspension settings and body. On older cars anti-roll bar links, bushes, ball joints, shock absorbers, top mounts and wheel bearings can wear.

In Finnish conditions wear is accelerated by potholes, frost, salt and low-profile tyres.

On some Beetle cars produced from October 2011 to August 2013 a recall was run due to possible rear-axle deformation and a risk of reduced stability. Whether the campaign was completed should be checked by the car’s VIN.

A check may be indicated by:

  • a knock over bumps
  • a hum that rises with speed
  • the car pulls to one side
  • steering-wheel vibration has appeared
  • tyres wear unevenly
  • the body rolls
  • stability has worsened

Volkswagen Beetle braking system

In winter the brakes are exposed to salt and moisture. On cars with low annual mileage discs can sometimes corrode before they wear down in thickness.

On older New Beetle cars it is also important to check brake pipes, hoses, calipers and the ABS unit. Some early cars had recalls related to ABS.

Brakes must be checked if:

  • squeal or a metallic sound is heard
  • vibration appears under braking
  • the car pulls to one side
  • one wheel gets hotter than the others
  • stopping distance has increased
  • the parking brake does not work correctly

Cooling system

On New Beetle cars, age can bring faults in the central locking, window regulators, sensors, instrument cluster, ABS, lighting and climate system.

A weak battery can trigger several dashboard warnings at once, especially after frost or a long standstill.

Before replacing electronic modules, the battery, alternator, fuses, wiring and stored faults must be checked.

For the later Beetle Cabriolet it is also recommended to check the roof for leaks and inspect the body for damage.

If water enters the cabin, the problem should be fixed quickly. Moisture can damage trim, wiring and electronic modules.

Air conditioning and heating

Working air conditioning matters in winter too. It helps clear moisture from the glass and keep a normal cabin climate.

On Beetle cars from 2012–2019 there are occasional complaints about unstable dual-zone climate control.

The New Beetle is already an older car, so body condition is especially important. Corrosion can appear on sills, the underbody, wheel arches, lower door edges, the boot lid and jacking points.

This type of fault requires careful diagnostics, because several sensors, limit switches and control units work together in a convertible roof mechanism. We checked fault codes, roof position recognition and the movement of the mechanism so the roof could be safely released from the incorrect position without causing additional damage.
