History of Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen introduced the production ID.4 in September 2020 as the brand's first electric SUV and the second ID family model after the ID.3. ID.4 became Volkswagen's first global electric car for different markets.

At launch in Europe, ID.4 was offered with rear-wheel drive, a 150 kW electric motor and a 77 kWh usable battery. Claimed WLTP range reached up to 520 kilometres.

Later versions joined the range with a 52 kWh battery (up to 346 km WLTP), 4MOTION all-wheel drive and GTX. The 77 kWh version later achieved up to 522 km WLTP.

In 2023 ID.4 received a major update: APP550 rear motor, up to 210 kW in Pro and 250 kW in GTX, range up to 556 km WLTP, DC charging up to 175 kW and battery preconditioning before fast charging.

In 2026 Volkswagen introduced ID.4 Pure with the APP350 motor at 140 kW and increased range — approximately 40 km more than the previous version.

Volkswagen ID.4 high-voltage battery

The high-voltage lithium-ion battery is the most expensive and important component of an electric car. Different ID.4 versions use 52 and 77 kWh usable batteries depending on specification and model year.

Battery capacity gradually decreases with age and mileage. Small degradation is normal and does not necessarily indicate a fault. When assessing condition, do not rely only on displayed range, as it depends on temperature, speed, heating, driving style and recent energy use.

On early versions maximum DC power was around 125–135 kW. ID.4 Pro 4MOTION can charge from 5 to 80 percent in about 36 minutes in favourable conditions.

After the 2023 update maximum DC power reaches up to 175 kW, and battery preconditioning helps speed up charging in cold weather.

Slow charging does not always mean a fault. Speed is affected by low battery temperature, high state of charge, charger limits, power sharing between vehicles, vehicle settings and software condition. In winter charging speed often drops due to battery protection.

Problems may be caused by the charging port, connector lock, cable, onboard charger, cooling system, software or the charging station itself.

Charging cable will not disconnect

On ID.4 the charging connector is locked by the car during charging. If the cable will not disconnect, first end the charging session and unlock the car.

Do not force the cable off — this can damage the port and connector. First use the manufacturer's emergency release procedure and identify the cause of the fault.

If the problem repeats, possible causes include:

12-volt battery ID.4

Although ID.4 uses a high-voltage traction battery, it also needs a conventional 12-volt battery to power electronic modules, locks, lighting and control systems.

A weak 12V battery can immobilise the car even if the traction battery is charged. It can also cause a large number of random warnings.
