The Volkswagen Tiguan was introduced in 2007 and became Volkswagen's first compact SUV in this segment. The model filled the gap between smaller urban crossovers and the larger Touareg. Petrol Tiguan TSI engines can develop problems with the timing chain, ignition coils, spark plugs, turbocharger, cooling system and increased oil consumption. Early 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TSI engines on first-generation cars deserve particular attention. Some 1.4 TSI engines can have serious timing chain problems, including chain skip or stretch.

Symptoms: rattle on start-up, uneven engine running, misfiring, Check Engine or EPC light on, loss of power, increased oil consumption, exhaust smoke, boost pressure faults.
