The classic 1946 Volkswagen Beetle, with some modifications, was produced until 2003, which made it the longest-serving record-holder on the assembly line and also the most popular car of the 20th century, with a total of 21,500,000 units assembled. In 1964, as part of a marketing campaign, every child born in a Volkswagen Beetle received $300 worth of company stock. The Volkswagen Group family includes many other German and European automakers, including the luxury ones: that's not counting Audi and Porsche, also SEAT and Skoda, the ultra-expensive Bugatti, Lamborghini and Bentley.
Volkswagen was briefly considered the most expensive company in the world in 2008 with a value of $370 billion, almost $30 billion more than its then main rival in oil giant Exxon-Mobi. In total German car production, every third car is owned by the Volkswagen Group and roughly every tenth new car sold in the world is a Volkswagen. Year after year, the battle for the title of the largest automaker in terms of total output is fought between the Volkswagen Group and Toyota: nine million new cars per year are at stake. The Volkswagen Group is one of the largest employers in the world, with more than 600,000 employees worldwide.
