Why should the timing belt be replaced in an Audi?

The engine's timing belt synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft. This is necessary for the valves in the cylinder head to open and close at the right time to allow the intake, compression, and combustion of the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber, which moves the pistons.

Although the timing belts produced by VAG are of high quality, this component needs to be replaced at certain intervals defined by the manufacturer because the rubber dries out and cracks over time, which can lead to belt failure and damage to the valves and cylinder head walls.

AUDI's maintenance schedule includes a visual inspection of the timing belt and tensioner every 60,000 km or 4 years to check for any looseness in the belt, tensioners, and tensioner pulley bearings.

The timing belt replacement is recommended to be done according to the manufacturer's instructions every 180,000 km of driving. However, we recommend checking the belt at each maintenance inspection and replacing it every 90,000 km because the harsh Finnish climate and operating conditions can contribute to component wear.

The main signs of timing belt wear include shine, cracks, uneven wear or wear at the edges, distortion of the belt's tooth structure, and other visually identifiable mechanical damage. Additionally, as the belt stretches, engine misfires or stalling can occur. If you notice any signs of excessive wear, we recommend contacting a service center for diagnosis and repair.

The timing belt replacement on an Audi involves removing the upper and lower timing belt covers, the tensioner, the timing belt itself, and the belt pulley. Depending on the engine's location, it may be necessary to remove the engine mount, cooling fans, radiator, and other components. The difficulty of timing belt replacement lies in ensuring that the timing belt and guide wheels are properly aligned and the timing belt is correctly tensioned.

Volkkarihuolto Service Center offers trained timing belt replacement services for all Audi vehicles according to the manufacturer's specifications. Please contact our service manager for more information about our services.
