Audi A7 — service and repair in Espoo
Audi A7 Sportback is a large premium Gran Turismo that combines coupe design, executive comfort and the practicality of a large tailgate. The model is technically close to the Audi A6 of the corresponding generations, but differs in body style, chassis tuning, equipment and a more sporty positioning.
Different Audi A7 versions use petrol TFSI engines, diesel TDI engines, S tronic and Tiptronic gearboxes, quattro all-wheel drive, mild-hybrid systems, plug-in hybrid TFSI e, and adaptive and air suspension. The sporty S7 and RS 7 also feature more powerful powertrains, reinforced transmission and high-performance braking systems.
At Volkkarihuolto Espoo we carry out diagnostics, maintenance and repair of Audi A7 at Ruukinmestarintie 7, 02330 Espoo.

History of the Audi A7
The first-generation Audi A7 Sportback appeared in 2010. Audi created a large four-door car with a sloping roofline and a practical fifth door, combining elements of a coupe, sedan and estate.
The second generation was presented in 2017 and reached the European market in early 2018. The new A7 received a fully digital interior, MMI touch response, 48-volt mild-hybrid systems on selected engines and more complex electronic assistants.
An important point: Audi lists the classic second-generation A7 Sportback in the model line through 2025. Therefore in 2026 the Audi A7 in Finland is primarily a used-market car, and when servicing it generation, engine, transmission and previous repair history are especially important.
Main generations:
- Audi A7 4G / C7 — 2010–2017
- Audi A7 4K / C8 — 2018–2025
First-generation Audi A7
The first A7 is technically related to the Audi A6 C7. On the used market you may find 2.8 FSI, 3.0 TFSI, 3.0 TDI, S tronic, Tiptronic and quattro.
Most cars already have significant age, so a good exterior condition on an A7 does not guarantee the absence of expensive technical faults. In addition to ordinary maintenance it is worth carefully checking:
- timing chain drive
- cooling system
- turbocharger on TDI
- DPF and EGR
- gearbox
- quattro
- driveshaft
- suspension
- electronics
- MMI
- power tailgate
- computer diagnostics
Second-generation Audi A7
The second generation became significantly more technological. Audi equipped the car with a digital cabin with two central touch displays, Virtual Cockpit, numerous driver assistance systems and a complex electronic architecture.
At launch the main versions were 55 TFSI — 3.0 TFSI and 50 TDI — 3.0 TDI. The 3.0 TFSI was initially paired with a seven-speed S tronic, and the 3.0 TDI with an eight-speed Tiptronic. Later additional four- and six-cylinder versions appeared, including 45 TDI and plug-in hybrid TFSI e.
Audi A7 servicing in Espoo
Audi A7 is a heavy, powerful and technically complex car. Preventive maintenance is therefore especially important.
In Finland, low temperatures, road salt and large temperature swings create additional load. On a heavy car with large wheels it is especially useful to check suspension, brakes and tyres every year. Items worth checking regularly include:
- engine oil
- filters
- timing drive
- cooling system
- S tronic or Tiptronic
- DPF
- EGR
- AdBlue
- quattro
- driveshaft
- brakes
- suspension
- 12V battery
- 48V system on MHEV
- air conditioning
- MMI and assistants
- scheduled maintenance
- oil and filter change
- computer diagnostics
- annual service
Audi A7 TFSI petrol engines
The A7 uses powerful turbocharged petrol engines. The most common variants include 2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TFSI and 4.0 TFSI on the RS 7 and selected sport versions.
For TFSI it is especially important to monitor engine oil level and condition, spark plugs, ignition coils, turbocharging, cooling system, crankcase ventilation and timing drive. Diagnostics are needed if:
- Check Engine lights up
- EPC appears
- the engine misfires
- power has dropped
- oil consumption has increased
- an unusual noise appears at start-up
- coolant level is dropping
- petrol engine repair
- computer diagnostics
Audi A7 3.0 TFSI
3.0 TFSI is one of the characteristic Audi A7 engines. On the second generation the 55 TFSI version initially developed 250 kW, or 340 hp, and 500 Nm. Audi paired this engine with a seven-speed S tronic and quattro.
If the engine starts to run unevenly or misfires appear, diagnostics should be carried out before replacing parts at random. At high mileage it is worth checking:
- cooling system
- chain drive
- crankcase ventilation
- turbocharging
- ignition system
- mild-hybrid components on corresponding versions
- petrol engine repair
- timing chain replacement
Audi A7 TDI diesel engines
Diesel A7 models suit long motorway mileages well and are widely represented in Finland. The 3.0 TDI is especially common.
On the second generation the 50 TDI version initially developed 210 kW, or 286 hp, and 620 Nm. The later A7 45 TDI used a 3.0 V6 TDI with 180 kW, a seven-speed S tronic, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and quattro ultra. The exhaust aftertreatment system includes DPF, EGR and SCR.
On a diesel it is worth paying attention to:
- DPF
- EGR
- AdBlue/SCR
- turbocharger
- injectors
- intake
- cooling system
- timing chain drive on corresponding engines
- TDI diesel engine repair
Audi A7 DPF
The DPF particulate filter is periodically cleaned by regeneration. If the car regularly drives on the motorway, conditions are usually favourable. With constant short trips regeneration may be interrupted.
Forced regeneration is not a universal solution. If the filter is filled with ash or the engine produces too much soot, the root cause must be fixed. During diagnostics it is worth checking soot and ash quantity, differential pressure, temperature sensors, EGR and engine condition.
Symptoms:
- idle speed has increased
- fans run after shutdown
- fuel consumption has risen
- regeneration starts too often
- a DPF indicator appears
- the car has lost power
- DPF diagnostics
Audi A7 EGR
EGR returns part of the exhaust gases to the intake. Over time the system can become contaminated. On some diesel versions the EGR cooler must also be checked.
If coolant level drops at the same time, this is especially important. Possible faults are indicated by:
- Check Engine
- loss of power
- unstable engine running
- frequent regenerations
- limp mode
- EGR diagnostics
AdBlue and SCR
Later diesel A7 models use an SCR system with AdBlue. For example, technical data for the A7 45 TDI explicitly list an SCR catalytic converter together with DPF and EGR.
If a countdown to engine start inhibition appears, the problem must be diagnosed before the remaining distance reaches zero. An AdBlue fault may be related to:
- insufficient fluid level
- NOx sensor
- pump
- injector
- heater
- level sensor
- wiring
- AdBlue diagnostics
Audi A7 timing chain
Most common Audi A7 V6 engines have a chain-driven timing drive. On some engines the design is located on the gearbox side, so repair can be labour-intensive.
Not every brief noise means a full chain replacement is needed, so diagnostic parameters are required first. Reasons for inspection include:
- metallic noise after a cold start
- synchronisation errors
- difficult starting
- unstable idle
- Check Engine
- timing chain replacement
Audi A7 S tronic
Many A7 versions use a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic. For example, the second-generation 55 TFSI uses S tronic, and the later 45 TDI was also paired with a seven-speed S tronic.
The A7 uses gearboxes rated for high torque, but they still require correct maintenance. For the corresponding gearboxes the transmission fluid change schedule must be followed. Diagnostics are needed if:
- jerks appear
- D or R engages with a delay
- vibration is felt
- shifts are accompanied by knocks
- a gearbox fault appears
- the car goes into limp mode
- S tronic service and repair
- gearbox oil change
Audi A7 Tiptronic
Some powerful versions use an eight-speed Tiptronic. Audi, for example, paired the second-generation 3.0 TDI 50 TDI with an eight-speed Tiptronic and permanent quattro.
This is a classic torque-converter automatic, technically different from S tronic. For a high-mileage car oil service history is especially important. Diagnostics should be booked if:
- knocks appear
- gear engagement is delayed
- the gearbox slips
- vibration is felt
- a transmission fault appears
- the gearbox overheats
- gearbox diagnostics and repair
- gearbox oil change
Audi A7 quattro
Most powerful A7 models have quattro all-wheel drive. The design differs, however: some cars use permanent all-wheel drive, while others use quattro ultra, which can disconnect the rear axle to reduce losses.
For example, the A7 45 TDI uses quattro ultra with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. An A7 3.0 TDI with Tiptronic may use permanent all-wheel drive. Servicing must therefore be matched to the specific car version.
Diagnostics are needed if:
- a hum appears
- vibration occurs
- the car behaves unusually under acceleration
- an all-wheel-drive fault appears
- transmission oil leaks are found
- computer diagnostics
- transmission oil change
Driveshaft and differentials
An all-wheel-drive A7 has additional transmission components: a propeller shaft, rear differential, central torque-distribution elements and CV joints.
A similar noise can come from hub bearings or tyres, so the source must be identified first. Faults may be indicated by:
- vibration under acceleration
- metallic knocking
- humming
- a knock when changing from braking to acceleration
- oil leak
- computer diagnostics
Mild Hybrid 48V
Most six-cylinder second-generation A7 models use a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. On the early 55 TFSI and 50 TDI Audi used a 48-volt electrical system and a starter-generator that allow the engine to switch off while coasting and enable recuperation.
MHEV does not make the car a full hybrid capable of long electric-only driving. The system does add a 48V battery, starter-generator, voltage converter and electronic control.
If numerous electrical faults appear, both the 12V and 48V systems must be diagnosed.
Audi A7 TFSI e
The second generation was also produced as a plug-in hybrid A7 Sportback TFSI e. The A7 55 TFSI e combines a 2.0 TFSI, an electric motor, a lithium-ion high-voltage battery, a seven-speed S tronic and quattro ultra.
Audi technical data for the 55 TFSI e list a battery with 17.9 kWh gross capacity and 14.4 kWh usable capacity, a maximum system output of 270 kW and AC charging up to 7.4 kW.
When servicing, both the petrol and high-voltage parts of the car must be considered. Work on the high-voltage system requires appropriate qualifications.
If the Audi A7 TFSI e will not charge
The cause is not necessarily the traction battery. Check the charging station, cable, charge port, connector lock, 12V battery, onboard charger, software and high-voltage system.
Diagnostics are especially needed if:
- charging does not start at all
- the process keeps interrupting
- the cable cannot be released
- electric mode has become unavailable
- a hybrid system fault appears
- computer diagnostics
- electrical repair
Audi A7 cooling system
The A7 uses a complex thermal management system. On TFSI, TDI and especially TFSI e there may be several cooling circuits.
Coolant should not be topped up regularly without finding the cause. Even a small leak on a powerful engine can later lead to overheating. Causes of a dropping fluid level may include:
- water pump
- thermostat
- valves
- radiator
- hoses
- EGR cooler
- heat exchanger
- coolant leak detection
Audi A7 suspension
The second-generation Audi A7 has five-link suspension front and rear. This design provides comfort and good handling, but contains a large number of joints and bushes.
Over time control arms, bushes, ball joints, anti-roll bar links, dampers and hub bearings can wear. Diagnostics are required if:
- the suspension knocks
- the car holds its line less well
- squeaking appears
- the steering wheel vibrates
- tyres wear unevenly
Audi A7 adaptive air suspension
For the second-generation A7 adaptive air suspension with electronically controlled dampers was offered. The system provides high comfort and can change the car’s characteristics depending on the Audi drive select mode.
Main components are air struts, compressor, valve block, air lines and level sensors. If there is a leak, do not limit the repair to replacing the compressor: first find where air is being lost.
Signs of a possible fault:
- the car drops after standing
- one corner of the body is lower than the others
- the compressor runs for too long
- a suspension warning appears
- the car does not change height
- computer diagnostics
Dynamic rear-wheel steering
The second-generation A7 was also offered with dynamic all-wheel steering. At low speed the rear wheels can turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, improving manoeuvrability. At high speed the system helps increase stability.
After suspension or steering repairs such a car requires especially careful checking of geometry and electronic calibrations.
Hub bearings
The large mass of the A7 and large wheels place serious load on hub bearings. The main symptom is a hum that increases with speed.
On quattro a similar sound may come from the transmission or tyres. Before ordering a bearing it is therefore advisable to locate the source precisely.
Audi A7 braking system
The A7 is a fairly heavy and powerful car. Even ordinary second-generation versions are fitted with large brake mechanisms, while the sporty S7 and RS 7 have substantially more capable systems.
In Finland road salt is an additional problem. On the hybrid TFSI e recuperation must also be taken into account when assessing brake behaviour. Inspection is needed if:
- vibration appears when braking
- the brakes squeal
- the car pulls to one side
- one wheel overheats
- the electronic parking brake shows a fault
12-volt battery
The A7 contains a large number of electronic control units, so battery condition is especially important. Before replacing expensive electronic components it is useful to check the power supply.
After fitting a new battery it may need to be registered in the energy management system. A weak 12V battery can cause:
- numerous warnings
- unavailable assistants
- Start-Stop problems
- MMI restarts
- slow electronics start-up
- gearbox or all-wheel-drive faults
- electrical repair
MMI and digital interior
The second-generation A7 was one of the first Audi models with MMI touch response. Two touch displays replaced a large share of physical buttons, and the instrument cluster can be fully digital.
Before replacing the MMI, power supply, software and stored faults must be checked. In the event of a fault the following may occur:
- black screen
- constant restarts
- slow operation
- no sound
- Bluetooth issues
- navigation problems
- climate control faults
- computer diagnostics
- electrical repair
Cameras, radars and assistants
The second-generation A7 could be fitted with a large number of assistants. Audi used cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors and even a laser scanner for selected systems.
Depending on equipment the car may have adaptive cruise control, Lane Assist, Audi pre sense, blind-spot monitoring, 360° cameras and parking assistants.
Faults may appear after windscreen replacement, body repair, suspension repair, an impact or disturbed wheel alignment. After such work cameras and radars may need calibration.
Air conditioning and climate system
The A7 has a complex climate system. On TFSI e the climate system also interacts with the high-voltage part of the car.
Inspection is needed if:
- the air conditioning does not cool
- one side of the cabin behaves differently
- clicking is heard under the dashboard
- the windows clear poorly of moisture
- temperature changes by itself
- air conditioning service
Power tailgate
The large rear door is one of the distinctive features of the A7 Sportback. If the door does not close fully, stops or reverses, both the mechanical and electrical sides must be checked.
On ageing cars problems may occur with:
- the electric drive
- the lock
- sensors
- wiring
- buttons
- struts
- electrical repair
Water in the boot
On any liftback it is worth watching the sealing of the rear body. Moisture near electronic control units can lead to much more expensive faults.
If water appears in the A7 luggage compartment, check:
- tailgate seal
- rear lights
- drains
- body repair areas
- panoramic roof on corresponding equipment
Audi S7
The S7 is a higher-performance version of the A7. Powertrains differed depending on generation and market.
These cars have a more powerful engine, reinforced transmission, quattro, sport suspension and more capable brakes.
Before purchase it is especially important to check for tuning. If power was increased by software, the actual load on the engine and transmission may have been substantially higher than factory.
Audi RS 7
The RS 7 is the most powerful version of the A7 family. The second-generation RS 7 uses permanent quattro all-wheel drive. In standard mode torque distribution is 40:60, and the system can vary it depending on conditions.
The model is also fitted with RS adaptive air suspension and optionally could have Dynamic Ride Control and dynamic rear-wheel steering.
Brake and suspension component costs are significantly higher than on a standard A7, so diagnostics before purchase are especially useful. On the RS 7 it is especially important to check:
- engine
- turbochargers
- cooling system
- gearbox
- quattro
- brakes
- suspension
- presence of tuning
- computer diagnostics
Pre-purchase inspection of an Audi A7
An Audi A7 can be an attractive used car, but the large number of complex systems makes a thorough inspection especially useful.
For TFSI e, charging, the high-voltage battery, hybrid mode and high-voltage faults are also checked. For S7 and RS 7 it is especially important to establish previous tuning and service quality.
It is recommended to check:
- cold start
- faults in all electronic control units
- engine
- oil consumption
- timing chains
- turbocharging
- cooling system
- DPF
- EGR
- AdBlue
- S tronic or Tiptronic
- quattro
- driveshaft
- suspension
- air suspension system
- brakes
- MMI
- assistants
- power tailgate
- body and underbody
- computer diagnostics
