Audi A6 — service and repair in Espoo

Model years:1994-...

Audi A6 is one of the key business-class models in the Audi range. It combines a high level of comfort, powerful petrol and diesel engines, complex multilink suspension, automatic transmissions and the brand’s quattro all-wheel drive.

In Finland, Audi A6 generations C6, C7 and C8 are especially common. Many older C5 cars are also found on the used market, and from 2025 sales of the new C9 generation began. So the name Audi A6 today covers cars with very different technical architectures — from relatively simple early-2000s diesels to plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid and modern cars with a large amount of electronics.

At Volkkarihuolto Espoo we carry out diagnostics, maintenance and repair of Audi A6 at Ruukinmestarintie 7, 02330 Espoo.

Audi A6

History of the Audi A6

The history of this model line began long before the A6 name itself. The predecessor was the Audi 100, produced from 1968.

In 1994 Audi renamed the updated Audi 100 C4 generation to Audi A6. From that point the A6 name has been used for the brand’s business-class cars. Audi confirms that the series received the A6 name in 1994, and by 2025 the entire C-series had approached ten million vehicles produced.

The new ninth generation C9 reached the European market in 2025. The A6 Avant went on sale in Europe in spring 2025, followed by the Sedan in summer. The new model is built on the Premium Platform Combustion and is offered with modern petrol and diesel engines, the mild-hybrid system MHEV plus and plug-in hybrid versions.

Main generations:

  • Audi A6 C4 — 1994–1997
  • Audi A6 C5 — 1997–2004
  • Audi A6 C6 — 2004–2011
  • Audi A6 C7 — 2011–2018
  • Audi A6 C8 — 2018–2025
  • Audi A6 C9 — from 2025

Audi A6 C5

The Audi A6 C5 is already an older car, but such vehicles are still fairly common in Finland.

The C5 was fitted with naturally aspirated petrol engines, turbocharged 1.8T units, V6 engines, 1.9 TDI and 2.5 TDI V6 diesels, manual gearboxes, Tiptronic, Multitronic on certain front-wheel-drive versions, and quattro.

For a C5, the age of the car already matters more than the specific engine model. Buying on looks alone is not enough — an inspection from underneath can tell you far more. It is especially worth checking:

  • front multilink suspension
  • oil leaks
  • cooling system
  • automatic gearbox
  • driveshaft and quattro
  • brake lines
  • corrosion
  • electrics
  • computer diagnostics

Audi A6 C6

The A6 C6 became noticeably more complex than the previous generation. It widely used 2.0 TFSI, naturally aspirated FSI, 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI, 3.0 TDI, Multitronic, Tiptronic, quattro, an electronic parking brake and the MMI system.

Many C6 cars now have high mileage, so typical diagnostic focus is linked less to one specific fault and more to overall age. Diesel V6 repairs can be expensive, so pre-purchase diagnostics are especially useful.

It is worth checking:

Audi A6 C7

The Audi A6 C7 is one of the most common A6 models on Finland’s used market. Popular versions include 2.0 TFSI, 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TDI, 3.0 TDI, S tronic, Tiptronic, quattro and A6 allroad.

The C7 combines relatively modern equipment with well-known VAG technology. On high-mileage cars it is especially worth checking:

Audi A6 C8

The C8 generation significantly increased the amount of electronics. The car received a digital instrument cluster, touch-controlled MMI, modern driver assistance systems and widespread mild-hybrid technology.

The range includes 2.0 TFSI, V6 TFSI, 2.0 TDI, V6 TDI, S tronic, Tiptronic, quattro, TFSI e and allroad quattro.

The complexity of the C8 means that thorough computer diagnostics are especially important. A fault in one component can appear across several control units at once.

New Audi A6 C9

The new A6 generation arrived in 2025. Audi built the A6 C9 on the new Premium Platform Combustion. The model is offered as Sedan and Avant, and the line-up includes petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Some versions use the MHEV plus system, which assists the combustion engine and helps improve efficiency.

Therefore, when servicing a C9 it is especially important to use procedures and data that apply specifically to the new generation. A modern A6 may also be equipped with:

  • air suspension
  • all-wheel steering
  • quattro
  • complex digital assistants
  • a new electronic architecture
  • computer diagnostics

Audi A6 service in Espoo

The Audi A6 is often used for high mileage and long journeys. In Finland the car is also exposed to low temperatures, road salt, humidity, frequent cold starts and temperature swings.

On high-mileage cars, preventive diagnostics often help find a problem before serious symptoms appear. It is worth checking regularly:

Audi A6 TFSI petrol engines

Across A6 generations, 1.8, 2.0, V6 and other petrol engines have been used. Modern versions mainly use turbocharged TFSI units.

It is worth monitoring oil level, spark plugs, ignition coils, the turbocharger, the cooling system, crankcase ventilation and timing. Diagnostics are advisable if:

Audi A6 oil consumption

On some petrol engines from earlier generations, elevated oil consumption is more common, but you cannot judge from the engine name alone.

If an A6 starts needing top-ups much more often than before, the cause should be identified. Simply adding oil continuously is not a full solution. Possible causes include:

  • external leaks
  • crankcase ventilation
  • turbocharger
  • oil control rings
  • valve stem seals
  • general engine wear
  • petrol engine repair

Audi A6 timing chain

Many petrol and V6/V8 A6 engines use a chain-driven timing system. On some engines the chains are on the gearbox side, which makes the repair considerably more labour-intensive.

Noise does not necessarily mean all chains must be replaced immediately, but it does require diagnostics. Signs of a possible problem:

  • metallic noise on cold start
  • timing synchronisation faults
  • unstable idle
  • difficult starting
  • Check Engine
  • timing chain replacement

Audi A6 TDI diesel engines

Diesel is one of the most popular Audi A6 options in Finland. Especially common are 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI and 3.0 TDI.

A large A6 suits diesel well thanks to frequent highway use and long range. With age, however, attention may be needed for DPF, EGR, AdBlue, the turbocharger, injectors, intake, manifold flaps and the cooling system.

Diagnostics are needed if:

  • the car loses power
  • smoke appears
  • fuel consumption has risen
  • regeneration happens often
  • the DPF light is on
  • an EGR or AdBlue fault appears
  • the car goes into limp mode
  • TDI diesel engine repair

Audi A6 DPF

The DPF traps soot, which is then burned during regeneration. On a car that regularly drives on the highway, regeneration usually runs more easily. If the A6 is used mainly on short trips, the process may be interrupted.

Forced regeneration is not suitable in every case. Diagnostics should check actual soot load, calculated ash mass, differential pressure, temperature sensors, EGR and injectors.

The driver may notice:

  • raised idle speed
  • fan running after shutdown
  • increased consumption
  • frequent regenerations
  • DPF indicator
  • reduced power
  • DPF diagnostics

Audi A6 EGR

EGR is used to reduce NOx emissions. On a diesel car the valve, passages and cooler gradually become contaminated.

If the coolant level is also dropping, the EGR cooler should be checked. Possible symptoms:

  • Check Engine
  • loss of power
  • unstable running
  • frequent regenerations
  • limp mode
  • EGR diagnostics

AdBlue and SCR

Newer diesel Audi A6 models use an SCR system. It is especially important to respond promptly to a message that starting will be blocked after a certain mileage.

Simply adding AdBlue does not fix an electronic or mechanical fault in the system. An AdBlue fault may be related to:

Audi A6 S tronic

Many A6 models use the dual-clutch S tronic gearbox. On the A6, transmission versions rated for higher torque than those in compact Audis are usually fitted.

For the relevant gearboxes, timely oil service is especially important. Before repair, the specific transmission code must be identified. Diagnostics are needed if:

Audi A6 Tiptronic

On powerful A6 versions and some quattro models, the classic Tiptronic automatic with a torque converter is used. This gearbox is especially common on strong V6 TDI models or S6/RS 6 of certain generations.

On a high-mileage car it is worth considering the real oil service history, even if the previous owner spoke of a “maintenance-free gearbox”. Diagnostics are required if:

Audi A6 Multitronic

On some older-generation front-wheel-drive A6 models, the Multitronic CVT was used. Its design differs substantially from S tronic and Tiptronic.

For Multitronic, the correct fluid and correct service procedure are especially important. Possible symptoms:

Audi A6 quattro

Quattro all-wheel drive is widely used on the Audi A6. On longitudinally mounted A6 powertrains the system differs technically from the all-wheel drive of compact Audis.

Depending on generation, classic permanent quattro, various centre differentials and quattro ultra on certain modern versions have been used.

For all-wheel drive it is important to use tyres of the same size with similar tread depth. Diagnostics are needed if:

Driveshaft and differentials

An all-wheel-drive A6 has a propeller shaft and several torque-distribution components. Similar noise can also come from hub bearings and tyres, so the source must be identified before ordering parts.

Possible fault signs:

  • vibration under acceleration
  • hum
  • jolt when moving off
  • noise at a certain speed
  • oil leaks
  • computer diagnostics

Audi A6 TFSI e

The A6 C8 was also built as a plug-in hybrid TFSI e. This powertrain combines a petrol TFSI, an electric motor, a high-voltage battery, S tronic and a charging system.

For example, the previous-generation A6 50 TFSI e uses a 2.0 TFSI, a high-voltage battery with 14.4 kWh usable capacity, quattro ultra and a seven-speed S tronic. Work on the high-voltage system requires appropriate qualifications.

Diagnostics are needed if:

  • the car will not charge
  • electric mode is unavailable
  • a hybrid system fault appears
  • charging is interrupted
  • electric range has dropped sharply
  • the combustion engine starts unusually often
  • computer diagnostics
  • electrical system repair

New Audi A6 e-hybrid

For the new C9 generation Audi offers plug-in hybrid versions as Sedan and Avant.

The new A6 e-hybrid received a battery with 25.9 kWh total and 20.7 kWh usable capacity. Audi claims up to about 106 km of electric range, and the powertrains are offered with system output of 220 or 270 kW.

When servicing such a car you must take into account at once:

  • petrol engine
  • high-voltage battery
  • electric motor
  • charging system
  • hybrid transmission
  • cooling system
  • computer diagnostics

Audi A6 cooling system

The A6 has a complex thermal management system. On powerful TFSI, TDI and hybrid versions it may include several circuits.

If coolant regularly needs topping up, the cause must be found. Fluid loss may be related to:

Audi A6 suspension

The Audi A6 traditionally uses complex multilink suspension. It provides high comfort and precise handling, but contains a large number of joints and bushes.

Over time, upper and lower arms, bushes, ball joints, anti-roll bar links, dampers and hub bearings can wear. Diagnostics are advisable for:

  • knocking
  • creaking
  • the car pulling to one side
  • steering wheel vibration
  • uneven tyre wear

Audi A6 air suspension

Some A6 models, especially allroad and well-equipped versions, have adaptive air suspension. The new A6 C9 is also offered with optional air suspension.

Main components are air struts, compressor, valve block, lines and level sensors. If the compressor constantly compensates for a leak, it may eventually fail as well.

Fault signs:

  • the car sits lower after parking
  • one corner of the body is lower
  • the compressor runs too long
  • a suspension fault appears
  • ride height cannot be changed
  • computer diagnostics

All-wheel steering

On modern A6 models, rear-wheel steering is available. On the new C9 Audi offers dynamic all-wheel steering, which improves manoeuvrability at low speed and stability at high speed.

After suspension or steering work it is important to allow for correct adjustment and calibration of the system.

Hub bearings

The substantial mass of the Audi A6 places serious load on hub bearings. A sign of wear is a hum that increases with speed.

On quattro models the noise source can sometimes be hard to distinguish from a differential or propeller shaft. Therefore the fault must be precisely located before replacement.

Audi A6 braking system

The A6 is a large and heavy car, so brake condition is especially important. In Finland salt accelerates disc corrosion, seized slides and corrosion of brake components.

On powerful S6 and RS 6 models the cost of brake components is considerably higher, so their condition is especially important to check before purchase. Inspection is needed if:

  • vibration appears
  • the brakes squeal
  • the car pulls to one side
  • one wheel gets hot
  • the electronic parking brake works incorrectly

Battery and MHEV

Many modern A6 models use a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. It exists alongside the normal 12V system and adds further electrical components.

The new A6 C9 also uses the MHEV plus system on some powertrains. If numerous faults appear, you should check:

MMI and electronics

The Audi A6 traditionally has a large amount of electronic equipment. Before replacing expensive modules it is worth checking the battery, power supply and diagnostic faults.

Possible problems:

Cameras, radars and assistants

Modern A6 models may be equipped with adaptive cruise control, Lane Assist, Audi pre sense, blind-spot monitoring, 360° camera, automatic parking and other assistants.

After windscreen replacement, suspension repair, body repair, an impact or disturbed wheel geometry, radars or cameras may need calibration.

Air conditioning and climate system

The A6 is often fitted with multi-zone climate control. Causes may include refrigerant leak, compressor, sensor, flap servo or heater valve.

The problem may present as:

  • one side of the cabin heats, the other does not
  • the air conditioning does not cool
  • clicking is heard under the dashboard
  • windows fog heavily
  • temperature changes by itself
  • air conditioning service

Audi A6 Avant

The A6 Avant is especially popular in Finland thanks to its large boot and practicality.

If water appears in the boot, the source should be found quickly, because electronic components may be nearby. It is also worth checking:

  • powered tailgate
  • rear wiper
  • wiring
  • seals
  • drains
  • rear suspension under regular heavy loads

Audi A6 allroad quattro

The A6 allroad combines an Avant body, standard all-wheel drive and increased ground clearance. In the C8 generation the allroad line-up included various TDI and TFSI engines, including powerful V6 units and Tiptronic.

This is especially relevant for cars that regularly drove on gravel roads. On an allroad it is especially important to check:

  • air suspension
  • compressor
  • quattro
  • underbody protection
  • propeller shaft
  • condition of wheel arches
  • computer diagnostics

Audi S6 and RS 6

The sporty S6 and RS 6 belong technically to the A6 family but need a separate approach. They use more powerful engines, a reinforced transmission, high-performance brakes, quattro and sport suspension.

A car with a remapped engine may place substantially higher load on the transmission than a standard version. Before purchase it is especially important to check:

Audi A6 pre-purchase inspection

A used Audi A6 can be a very comfortable car, but technical mistakes when buying can prove expensive.

For TFSI e the high-voltage battery, charging, hybrid mode and high-voltage system faults are also checked.

Before purchase it is worth checking:

  • cold engine start
  • faults in electronic modules
  • oil consumption
  • timing drive
  • turbocharger
  • cooling system
  • DPF
  • EGR
  • AdBlue
  • S tronic or Tiptronic
  • quattro
  • propeller shaft
  • air suspension
  • brakes
  • MMI
  • climate control
  • electronic assistants
  • computer diagnostics
