Audi Timing Chain Replacement in Espoo
Volkkarihuolto performs repairs and maintenance of Audi vehicles. One of the service center's areas of operation is timing chain replacement. Timing chain breakage rarely happens, but over time, its stretching is a common problem.
What is a timing chain?
The timing chain is a central part of the engine that transfers power from the crankshaft to the distributor and ensures synchronized operation of the valves and piston. Loosening of the chain leads to wear of timing chain components, which reduces the car's power and increases fuel consumption.
The manufacturer recommends checking the chain after 120,000 km of driving to determine if replacement is necessary. This schedule applies if the car has been regularly serviced and operated in optimal conditions.
Signs that timing chain replacement is needed
Timing chain replacement should be considered if you notice the following issues:
- Irregular engine operation when stopping or idling
- Unusual metallic knocking or friction in the engine area, especially on a cold engine
- Thick smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Detection of significant wear of the toothed wheel, chain tensioners during inspection
To ensure that the part is indeed damaged, computer diagnostics must be performed.
Audi timing chain replacement process
The work requires original spare parts and tools (typically, along with the chain, the following are replaced: camshaft adjuster, chain tensioner, chain damper, and other parts).
The timing chain replacement is performed in the following order:
- Removing the engine cover
- Adjusting the engine marks
- Installing the gear rack supporting the crankshaft pulley
- Removing the high voltage wire from the ignition coil, putting the transmission in neutral. Rotating the engine with the starter motor
- Detaching the crankshaft pulley, unscrewing the chain tensioner fixing screws, and then removing the chain tensioner
- A similar procedure is performed with the auxiliary crankshaft pulley
- Disassembling the timing chain
- The procedure ends with checking the operation of the installed part
Case Example: Timing Chain Replacement Audi A5 2.0TFSi
A customer came in with an Audi A5 2.0TFSi that had abnormal noise coming from the front of the engine. Our diagnosis revealed stretching of the timing chain, which is a common issue in this engine type. A stretched timing chain can lead to severe engine damage, so immediate action was necessary.
We performed a complete timing chain and guide replacement. The process required partial disassembly of the front end of the engine, inspection of the chain and all related components, and replacement of damaged parts. After the work, the engine now runs perfectly without any extraneous noise. Timely service saved the customer from a potentially expensive engine overhaul in the future.
